Most AI works out of sight. You ask a question, something happens somewhere and an answer appears. That's fine for a calculator. It's less fine for the thing about to choose where you sleep on Friday.

So we've been giving Pin Drop's AI a face. Six faces, as it turned out, because once we started sketching we found it very hard to stop.

This post introduces the cast, explains the thinking behind them and shows you where they will live: pindrop.md, the new way to use your Pin Drop places with the AI you already talk to. If you'd rather skip to the good bit, early access is open now.

Why give an AI a face at all

Pin Drop's AI does most of its work in the background. Ask Claude or ChatGPT for a hotel near Thursday's meetings and it checks in with Pin Drop. Pin Drop ranks the options against the places you've saved and rated, then hands back a shortlist with reasons. All of that happens in a few seconds you can't see.

A spinner tells you nothing during those seconds. A character can. A pigeon that bobs its head while it thinks, then lands when it has an answer, tells you what's happening without a single word of interface. That's our first design principle at work: the best interface is the one you barely notice.

The rules we set ourselves

Cute has a cost if you're careless with it. An AI with big eyes can easily feel like it's pretending to be your friend. So the cast follow three rules.

  • Every character comes from a real behaviour. Homing pigeons find their way back. Bees dance to tell the hive where the good flowers are. Nobody needs a backstory explained to them.
  • They never pretend to have been somewhere. Our AI doesn't say 'when I stayed there'. It tells you what regulars do and why a place fits you. A friendly face doesn't change that.
  • Motion always means something. Thinking, found and saved each have their own animation. The character is a status light first and a mascot second.

Meet the cast

Six characters, all still in testing. Here's who they are and what they do when the AI is busy.

Pidge, a round blue-grey pigeon with a green satchel

Pidge

The homing pigeon

Street-smart, a little nosy about where you're going and never, ever lost.

Homing pigeons carried messages between people long before maps fitted in a pocket. They find their way back from places they've never been. That makes Pidge our most natural guide, at home on a London terrace or a New York fire escape.

When it's working: a thoughtful head bob. When it has an answer: it lands.

Waggle, a round fuzzy bee in a green scarf

Waggle

The honeybee

Busy, sociable and constitutionally unable to keep a good spot to itself.

Real bees perform a waggle dance to tell the hive exactly where the best flowers are, with direction and distance built into the moves. That's a shared map, performed by an insect. We couldn't resist.

When it's working: a steady hover. When it shares a place with your team: the waggle.

Digby, a mole in round glasses and a green miner's helmet

Digby

The mole

The quiet expert. Short-sighted, so it works by feel and somehow always knows.

Digby digs up the places that never make the top-ten lists: the café the regulars use, the side street that saves you ten minutes. It's the one we picture doing the searching.

When it's working: the headlamp sweeps. When it's found something: it pops up, very pleased with itself.

Trundle, a peach snail with a green ceramic shell

Trundle

The snail

Unhurried, content and carrying home on its back.

The spiral on Trundle's shell is a dotted route winding into a destination. That makes it our natural keeper of trips and journals, the one reminding you to slow down and save the good bits. Slow isn't what you want from a search, so Trundle won't be doing those.

When it's working: eye stalks swivel. When a day is saved: the route on its shell fills in.

Pebble, a brown sea otter holding a green pebble

Pebble

The sea otter

Warm, loyal and protective of the things it loves.

Sea otters keep a favourite stone tucked under one arm. They also hold hands while they sleep so they don't drift apart. Saved places and shared maps, in otter form.

When it's working: a thoughtful pebble toss. When you save a place: the pebble goes up, proudly.

Fold, a folded paper map with thin black arms and legs

Fold

The paper map

Practical, slightly fussy and knows the area inside out.

Fold is the map itself, come to life. It unfolds to show you more and folds itself neatly away when you're done. It's also the only member of the cast that can be read upside down.

When it's working: its panels breathe in and out. When it's done: a small hop.

What they're helping with: pindrop.md

pindrop.md connects your Pin Drop places to the AI you already use. It works with Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and other assistants that support MCP. Ask for a hotel near your meetings or a dinner spot the whole group will agree on. Pin Drop ranks the options against the places you've saved and rated.

The important part is what the AI doesn't get. It sees the rankings and the reasons. It never sees your list. Sensitive details are off by default, so a recommendation might mention a step-free entrance without ever explaining why that matters to you. Every query appears in your dashboard. Any connected AI can be disconnected in one go.

Where a place has no online booking, Pin Drop can phone ahead for you, sharing only what the booking needs. It works best in the US and the UK today, with more countries on the way.

If you already use Pin Drop to plan a trip with a map or to plan a group holiday everyone agrees on, this is the same map doing more of the legwork. The same privacy-first thinking runs through all of it, as does the way teams share a map without the chaos.
