Pin Drop vs Maps.me

Maps.me is a fast, detailed offline map with turn-by-turn navigation, and it is genuinely good at that. Pin Drop is not a navigation app. It is the map that holds the places you want to remember, unlimited and organised your way, on the phone and at the desk.

Unlimited places on the free plan.

No cap to migrate into and nothing to prune when you bring years of saved spots across.

Your places stay portable.

Import from Google Maps, Google My Maps, Mapstr and spreadsheets, and export whenever you want.

Organised your way.

Tag, group and filter places however makes sense to you, with photos and notes on each.

Phone and desktop, in sync.

Plan properly on a big screen, then have it all in your pocket on iPhone and Android.

Two different jobs on the same map.

Maps.me does offline navigation properly. Detailed vector maps you download before you travel, turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking and cycling, and search that works with no signal at all. Recent releases have added contour lines and hill shading. For getting around a country with no data connection, it earns its place.

Where people run into friction is the saving rather than the navigating. Maps.me is free to download with a PRO subscription on top, and the free tier limits how many map regions you can keep downloaded. Bookmarks are stored in the app's own binary format, which is why moving a few years of saved places somewhere else is rarely as simple as it should be.

Pin Drop is built around the saving. Every place you pin is unlimited on the free plan, with your own tags, photos and notes on each one. Import brings places across from Google Maps, Google My Maps, Mapstr and spreadsheets, and export takes them out again any time you like. Your places are never the thing holding you in.

Routing is there, and multi-stop routes hand off to Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze rather than trying to out-navigate a dedicated offline app on its own ground.

So keep whatever offline map you trust for the drive through somewhere with no signal. For the places themselves, move them somewhere they are unlimited, organised the way you think and yours to take with you.

Yes. Navigate with Maps.me, keep and share your favourite places in Pin Drop. Your saved map travels with you across trips and devices.

Can I save and import places into Pin Drop?

Yes. Save places from anywhere, organise them into maps and add notes and photos to each pin. It syncs across your phone and desktop.

Is Pin Drop a good Maps.me alternative?

If you mainly want to save, organise and share places rather than navigate offline, Pin Drop is the better fit. For offline routing, keep Maps.me too.

How much does Pin Drop cost?

Pin Drop has a free plan and paid plans. See the pricing page for current plans. Maps.me pricing is separate and changes over time, so check their site.
