What's new.

Pin Drop has been rebuilt from the first screen you see to the last control you tap. There is a new interface throughout, a search that finally reaches every corner of your map and a first run that gets a new user to a saved place in under a minute rather than leaving them staring at an empty map.

Three things drove this release. The first is that opening Pin Drop for the first time asked too much of people: an empty map, no explanation and an account wall before any value. That is now a guided journey you can take without signing up at all. The second is that finding things had quietly stopped scaling. Once you have a few hundred pins, a few routes and a handful of territories, a search that only looks at pin names is not a search. The third is that the interface had grown in layers over several years and needed one coherent system rather than a dozen local decisions.

Alongside that, a long list of reliability work: uploads that keep their order and survive a restart, video that plays properly, team changes that appear without a manual refresh and units and dates that are finally correct everywhere.

TL;DR

Getting started

The first-launch experience is new from top to bottom. A rebuilt welcome screen, a Start mapping guest journey so you can use the app before deciding anything and sign-in with Apple, Google or email built in properly rather than bolted on.

It is also resumable. If you close the app halfway through setup, you come back where you left off. Signing out no longer makes the app treat you as a brand-new install. If storage, authentication or permissions fail, there is a safe route onward instead of a dead end.

The startup itself has been rebuilt too: a native splash, an animated icon and wordmark sequence, then a curtain transition into the welcome screen, with reduced-motion support for anyone who would rather not have it.

Location and notification permissions are now their own screens, with artwork, an honest explanation of what each one buys you and a Maybe later that genuinely means later. If you grant permission in system settings instead, the app notices and moves on.

Your first pin is guided. New accounts and guests go straight into placing a pin, with a live address preview, rotating suggestions, a Name this place step, suggested tags such as Food, Travel, Client and Ideas, plus a live preview of the pin colour and icon as you choose.

A Get Started checklist then covers the things that make the app useful rather than just installed: dropping a pin, filling the map through imports, organising places, backing up with an account, planning a route and inviting your team where that applies. Progress shows in the account drawer and the map profile button.

Search

Search is now a bottom sheet and drawer rather than a single field. It searches across Pin Words, coordinates, pins, tasks, notes, territories, routes, visits, places, tags and people.

Results are grouped by type with counts, so you can see at a glance where a match came from. Sections expand with Show more. Recent searches are kept and can be cleared. You can bias a search around a selected pin, or search inside a single tag. There are proper loading, empty and no-results states, plus a warning when part of the search could not reach the server rather than silently returning less.

You can also create a pin directly from a place result.

The map

Drop-pin controls have been redesigned with the new interface, with rotating suggestion messaging and more reliable reverse geocoding, including a background pass that fills in addresses for pins that were missing one.

When precise location is not available, the app now falls back to an approximate position from your connection, draws a radius overlay so you can see the accuracy you are getting and frames the camera sensibly around it. Precise coordinates no longer linger after you withdraw permission.

Fixed: Android pins that sometimes did not appear, pin taps that did not reliably open the pin card, map reloading when the theme changes on Android, compass and heading reset and accidental pin taps while a drawer is opening.

Pin cards and details

The pin card and detail sheet are rebuilt around the new sheet system, with better snap points, gestures and dismissal. Pin detail now loads in stages with proper skeletons rather than blocking on a full fetch, transitions between pins are smoother and tags read better in both the card and the pin list.

Photos and video

Media handling has been substantially reworked. Uploads now hold stable identities so ordering is preserved, there is a single upload queue shared across the map, account, pin and media screens. Queued, uploading, failed and completed states are visible rather than implied.

You can retry a single upload or every failed upload at once. That state survives an app restart. Failed work backs off exponentially rather than hammering, permanent server rejections stop retrying and a pin's own details can still sync even when one of its images cannot.

Video now plays inside the app, with play, pause, buffering, seeking, elapsed time and duration, poster images while loading, full screen and playback position preserved as you move between media.

Working together

Workspace changes now arrive in real time, so a teammate's edit appears without a manual refresh.

Roles and permissions have been centralised into one evaluation path and applied consistently across pins, media, people, custom data, routes, tasks, visits, pipelines, territories, sharing and settings. Actions you cannot perform are now hidden or disabled rather than failing when you tap them. Locked workspaces behave predictably when a subscription or trial ends.

Organising

The Organise section is rebuilt around Tags, Territories and Places visited.

Tags gain search, sorting by name, created, updated or recently used, persisted sort preferences, reordering, statistics including pin count and coverage, search within a tag, pin selection and removal, plus a dedicated picker for managing membership. Tag colours and labels are more readable.

Places visited brings recent visit history into the same place, with guidance on the permissions visit tracking needs, a direct route to device settings and controls for clearing history.

Plans and billing

The upgrade experience has been reworked for Solo, Team and Team Pro, with monthly and annual billing, seat selection and team-size pricing, plus a route for larger workspaces that do not fit the standard tiers.

Purchasing now runs through the App Store and Google Play catalogues directly, with trial status and countdown, next invoice information, team renaming, in-app renewal of an expired Team trial, billing warnings for administrators and clear contact-your-admin messaging for members.

Language

A full-screen language picker with country flags and native language names, grouped into popular and additional languages, including separate English and US English.

Changes apply immediately, persist locally and save to your profile when you are signed in. Translation coverage has been expanded across onboarding, search, account, apps, imports, routes, tasks, visits, territories, pipelines, settings and error states, with better plural handling and validation that stops placeholders being lost in translation.

Interface

Underneath all of the above is a new component system: a bottom sheet with floating, inset, solid, transparent and glass variants, hug, partial and full-screen snap points, sticky headers and footers, plus proper keyboard synchronisation. A button system with primary, outline, glass, card, light, dark, destructive and hollow variants. Typography, inputs, tags, tabs, checkboxes, toggles, dividers, list items, cards and prompts, all theme-aware.

Deletion confirmations now use a single consistent prompt rather than varying by screen.

Also fixed

• Unit settings redesigned with Imperial, Metric and Custom, with independent preferences for distance, altitude, area and temperature
• Weather values using the wrong unit
• Timezone handling for server timestamps and UTC date display
• A stuck loading state during workspace loading

Under the hood

Expo, React Native, RevenueCat, routing, image, linking and update dependencies refreshed. iOS scene lifecycle support, updated privacy manifests and required-API declarations. Android splash handoff, verified links, instant app and App Clip configuration. Analytics expanded across onboarding, authentication, account setup, upgrades, purchases, sharing, imports and creation, with signup and login-source attribution.

Test coverage has grown considerably: unit and component tests across onboarding, permissions, first-pin creation, search, maps, drawers, tags, billing, authentication, media, uploads and video, plus Maestro end-to-end flows for interrupted onboarding recovery, permission journeys, account setup, first pin, imports, backup and sign-in, sign-out navigation and media-grid stability. A QA runner covers personas, scenarios, device setup and release checks.

• Blank map or pin list: Fixed an issue where the map or pin list could occasionally remain invisible after opening or navigating around the app
• Disappearing location dot: The user's blue location dot now stays correctly synchronized with the phone's location permission
• Faster location updates: The locate button now responds immediately when a recent location is available and continues looking for a more accurate position in the background
• Better location-permission handling: Declining location access no longer sends users unnecessarily to another settings screen.
• Disappearing bottom action bar: Fixed the reported issue where the bottom bar containing the add, search and menu actions could disappear
• Smoother and faster search: Search results now load and scroll more efficiently, particularly with longer result lists
• Improved search layout: Fixed scrolling boundaries, kept the empty-results message centered, and prevented the keyboard from covering the list results
• Search now has images: Pin and User profile images are now displayed where available
• Letter-based tags: Tags can now use one or two letters instead of an icon. Suggested letters are generated automatically from the tag name and appear everywhere the tag is used, including map pins and lists
• New Hybrid map style: Added a Hybrid option alongside Default and Satellite in the map section of Filters
• More relevant map preview: The map preview in Filters now reflects the area currently being viewed instead of always showing a fixed example location
• Better translations: Improved singular and plural wording for item counts across supported languages

When we started to bring Pin Drop back to life, we were inheriting over 10 years of code. Everyone's data was held locally on their devices, so if they lost their phone or the app stopped working, that was it. We moved to a cloud-based infrastructure so your data is always accessible, backed up and secure.

In 2025 we decided the old design and architecture needed to be rebuilt from the ground up. The result is what we have creatively named v6.

Fresh design

The app and website have been rebuilt from scratch, with serious speed improvements.

New base map

We switched from Apple to Google Maps for enhanced satellite cover and improved clarity at high zoom, allowing for more accurate pin placement.
